Smaller Images, Faster Pages

WebP and AVIF are the modern standard for web images — often 30–80% smaller than JPEG or PNG at equivalent visual quality, which directly improves page load speed and Core Web Vitals scores.
This free tool converts images entirely in your browser using the Canvas API — nothing is uploaded anywhere — and also includes a transparency tool for turning a solid-color background into a real transparent PNG, useful for logos and simple product shots.

How It Works

1. Upload an Image

Drag and drop or choose a file — nothing leaves your browser.

2. Pick a Format

WebP or AVIF, with a quality slider for lossy formats.

3. Convert

See the before/after file size, right in the browser.

4. Download

Save the converted file, ready to use.

Format Guide

Which Format Should You Use?

WebP

The safe modern default — supported by essentially every current browser, with strong compression for both photos and graphics.

AVIF

The best compression available today for photographic images, at the cost of slower encoding and support that isn't quite universal yet.

JPEG XL

Technically excellent, but not yet encodable in any browser — worth watching, not yet worth shipping as your primary format.

FAQsImage Converter & Transparency

Why is AVIF greyed out for me?

This tool tests your browser's actual AVIF encoding support before enabling the option, since unsupported browsers silently produce a PNG instead of an error. If it's disabled, try a recent version of Chrome or Edge on desktop.

Why can't I convert to JPEG XL?

As of 2026, no browser supports encoding JPEG XL through the standard web APIs this tool uses. Chrome added JPEG XL decoding behind an experimental flag in version 145, but not encoding, and Safari's support remains partial.

Does the transparency tool use AI background removal?

No. It removes a specific color you click on, within an adjustable tolerance — reliable for solid, flat backgrounds like product or logo shots, but it won't cleanly separate a subject from a complex or textured background.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. All conversion and transparency processing happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded to any server.
